Getting Rid of Aphids on Orchids

Aphids are small green insects that have the potential to ruin and even kill your orchids very quickly.

They are pear-shaped and come in a variety of colours including black, brown and pink but perhaps the most common colour is green.

They feed on the sap of orchids (as well as a variety of other plant species) and this causes the orchid to wither, its leaves to discolor, it's blooms to drop off and can even result in it's death.

Fortunately, there is a way to get rid of aphids - by creating your own inexpensive insecticide using everyday household items.

You will need:

  • An empty spray bottle
  • A jug
  • Dishwasher detergent
  • Vegetable oil
  • Rubbing alcohol (Surgical Spirit)
  • Water

Directions

  1. Fill a jug with water
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the water
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of dishwasher detergent
  4. Add 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol / Surgical Spirit
  5. Mix well
  6. Pour the solution into the spray bottle
  7. Spray liberally on your orchid especially around the area of aphid activity
  8. Repeat two or three times a day until the aphids have been eradicated

This solution will kill the aphids without harming your orchid. It is also effective at killing a whole host of other insect pests that could harm your orchid.
